Detailed description

Find out what you will be doing on the tour with us

Lychakiv Cemetery offers you a comprehensive tour of Lviv and its culture since its establishment under Austrian rule in 1786. With more than 300.000 graves, you wouldn’t find out all the details that this place has to offer on your own. Now not all the names of people buried at Lychakiv Cemetery might be known to you. But the stories of these people are simply intriguing and will give you an insight into what life was like during Austrian times:

  • Baczewski family – The Baczewski family once owned the most important vodka company in all of Poland. They had the best marketing, the best products and the most famous people in Europe drank their vodka. But this legacy almost came to a tragic and complete end.
  • Solomiya Krushelnytska – One of the most talented singers to have ever wandered on earth, Solomia Krushelnitska became so famous, that she even made it to become a singer at the Scala of Milan.
  • Ivan Levynskyi – The owner of a factory, he became one of the most influential architects in the city of Lviv. There is hardly any building of fame, which is not associated with him in Lviv.

Those are just three of the people that we will talk about on the tour. But of course we will also feature all the other famous people buried here: Ivan Franko, Stepan Banach, Maria Konopnicka or Volodymyr Ivasyuk for example.

Understanding the history of Galicia at Lychakiv Cemetery

And with the people and their graves there is also a memorial culture that tells you a lot about the past of all of Galicia. It is here that soldiers of very different armies are buried that are heroes to different people. Many times enemies were buried right next to each other. That is where we can tell you about the events of World War I and II and the struggle of both Poles and Ukrainians to have an independent nation again. Join us to experience the history of Lviv and Galicia through this beautiful cemetery!
